Die Arbeit ist in vier Kapitel gegliedert. Das erste Kapitel behandelt die vorkoloniale part Zimbabwes, die Gesellschaftsformation der shona-sprechenden Gruppen und die Hauptentwicklungen im 19. Jahrhundert. Im nächsten Kapitel wird auf die koloniale Transformation der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse eingegangen, die mit der Okkupation des heutigen Zimbabwe durch die von Cecil Rhodes gegründete Aktiengesellschaft BSAC (British South Africa corporation) einherging.
Das dritte Kapitel stellt den Verlauf und die schwierige Durchsetzbarkeit der internationalen Sanktionen dar, die als Reaktion auf die vom Smith-Regime erklärte einseitige und völkerrechtswidrige Unabhängigkeit Südrhodesiens erlassen wurden.
