Lifting The Hood: Facebook Connect

facebook

Reid just took the ‘How much do you hate silly quizzes’ quiz and scored a 99%

I installed the Facebook Connect plugin the other day, and was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. After adding a function to my comments.php file, users can now click a button and login to their Facebook account. Then upon adding a comment to a post it will display their Facebook user image, and information. It adds functionality to repost the comment back on their facebook wall which is fantastic for giving users easy ways to promote your writing – all their friends will see that comment in their feed. This seems like a great win for a lot of business looking to get some extra social media traction.

In addition to the login button, it displays a little window in the upper right corner of the screen to log people out of their Facebook account. It was pretty quick to install and implement. My only complaint was around a bunch of unnecessary presentational code that I had to strip out so it looked nice in my blog. Additionally I had to swap the button image out for one without a white background. All in all it took about 20 minutes to get fully implemented. Not too bad. We’ll see what effects it has on traffic and commenting.

FYI, you might want to check out the RPX plugin. RPX lets you log in via Facebook, Google, AOL, Twitter, OpenID, Wordpress, Blogger, and many other services. Basically, no one needs to create a separate local account for your site. Very well implemented (at least the WP version).

Thanks for the heads up. I’m for sure going to check that out. Personally I really wish that OpenID had caught a hold in the marketplace. It seems like if it was going to, it would have by now. Not sure if facebook is going to be able to take that role on by default as more web apps cross integrate.
