The English term fugue originates in the 16th century and is derived from either the French fugue or Italian fuga, which in turn comes from Latin, also fuga, which is itself related to both fugere (‘to flee’) and fugare, (‘to chase’). The piece would have been premiered on a Cavaillé-Coll instrument, as the company supplied many organs to private contractors, one of whom was the de Polignac.[1] The piece is just over 20 minutes in duration[3] and consists of a single continuous movement with seven tempo marks.
