Gilbert -1N is another very fine shaper tip (tied at 72.5 - 73 mm. on a Pisoni staple) - it is noticeably narrower than Gilbert 1 (and as a result somewhat more confining) but it easily keeps the pitch up. The clarinet is a single reed instrument. As a common and popular instrument, it was gradually displaced in the eighteenth century by the piano. Most have "semi-automatic" octave keys, in which the second-octave action closes the first, and some have a fully automatic octave key system, as used on saxophones. As the oboe and cor anglais have such a characteristic tone, they are best used economically. Both are available in multiple variations to achieve different ranges, but B-flat clarinets and the tenor and alto saxophone are the most popular.
