I found this to be extremely helpful when I was writing my own book, To the One Who Conquers: 50 Daily Meditations on the Seven Letters of Revelation 2-3 (Crossway, 2008, 239 pp.). Stegner points out, Mark may have in mind a Targumic tradition whereby Isaac, bound on the altar, looks up into heaven and sees the heavens opened with angels and the Shekinah of God, a voice proclaiming, �Behold, two chosen ones, etc.� There is even the note that the willingness of Isaac to be slain may serve to atone for Israel�s sins.

Based on that information, Jesus’s ministry lasted two years, at the very least. Early Matthew, Mark and Luke are so alike in their telling that they are called the Synoptic Gospels, meaning “seen together”—the parallels are clear when they are looked at side by side. It is not that they are to be exempt from it but that they are to be brought safely through it. Matthew also seems here to want to foreshadow the death and resurrection of Jesus.

So, afterwards, God said that his people should make shelters during the 7th month of the year. The forty days of Jesus in the wilderness recall both Moses� period of forty years in the desert of Midian before returning to Egypt (Bowman, p. 109) and the forty-day retreat of Elijah to the wilderness after the contest with Baal�s prophets (1 Kings 19:5-7), where Elijah, like Jesus, is ministered unto by angels (Miller, p. 48). Ephesus was full of sorcerers; Ac.19:19 tells how at the preaching of the name of Christ in the early days the magicians burned their books.

In interpreting Ephesians 4:11, there is a question about what Paul means by the terms �apostles and prophets� in this passage. Keener, Craig S. 1- 2 Corinthians (NCBC). It is more likely that the meaning is that there is no time left, that there is to be no further delay, that Antichrist is about to burst upon the scene in all his destructive terror.

Swete says: "What sinners dread most is not death, but the revealed presence of God." There is nothing in the whole of antiquity to equal his writings on St. Surely we are meant to see that in the holy city there is room for everyone. Whether a Bible will be made available having these modified NAB texts is not known at this time. What makes typology different from allegory (see below) is that typology is closely tied to history. That is a perfectly correct translation, but there is more in it than meets the eye.

General Commentaries are commentaries of individual books of the Bible. The unbelieving are those who refused to accept the Gospel or those who with their lips accepted it, but by their lives showed that they did not believe it. In Nehemiah 7:6-73, Nehemiah copied the register of the first people who returned from *exile. It is true that these same texts present a multitude of differences in details, but the variety and uncertainty to which that may give rise does not weaken the stability of the whole from a historical point of view.
